I don't think it is anything new to hear about the side-effects of technology and social media. It seems that quite often we are bombarded with new studies and research revealing--especially now that some of these things have been around for a bit--what the long term effects and by-products of modernization are.
A saying I have been using for a long time--probably all the way back since early high school--is that with modern technology (especially cellulars) people are "connected afar, disconnected up close."
It is the person far away, beaming in on the shiny device that grabs a person's attention, and interrupts a conversation (that quite often now-a-days is awkward because many young people can't hold a conversation!).
The above video is a fantastic talk on this subject. Very informative and very enlightening if you have 20 minutes to spare.
All in all though it is important to remember though: technology is good. It has done so much to make life easier and more manageable, and provided the ability for people to do much more and be more thrifty with what we have. Technology in it of itself is not bad, but it very frequently is corrupted by its users.
