It's funny how the timing of things often works out. Today Logan and I had our letter to the editor on "open membership" published by Mustang News at Cal Poly, SLO. We sent it in about four weeks ago, so we were starting to wonder if they would ever print it.
Flash back to exactly one year ago today to October 27, 2013 and that is when Mustang News ran their first story on the beginning stages of our advocacy work on eliminating or revising the "open membership" policy.
The issue is as relevant today as it was then, but growing in magnitude as more student organizations continue to be de-recognized by CSU campuses because of this unfortunate and unnecessary policy.
Logan and I are fighting back, and we hope others will continue to join us. Don’t be a bystander — stand up and be proactive about defending your rights and the rights of others! (And/or keep us in your prayers!)
If you're read through my blog posts here you will have noticed that I've written a lot about Free Speech, "open membership" and related topics. These are topics of great interest to me, and that I am passionate about working on.
My brother and I decided to take things to the next level and collaborate to launch a CSU-wide organization to coordinate advocacy efforts in regard to the "open membership" policy. Our group is CSU SOFA: CSU Student Organizations for Free Association. In order to effectively work to get this policy removed or revised, groups that are affected need to work together on a united front, and we think this will be a good step toward making that possible.
Check out our web-site www.csusofa.org for more information about the coalition, to join, or for more information about the "open membership" issue in general.
