Today's Readings: 31 August 2015

For my first post in quite a while (unfortunate that it has been so long!), I thought I'l put up a compilation of a number of great articles I've read relatively recently. I've been pondering how to keep my website alive (i.e. how to be more active on it), so I thought one way would be to share what I am reading (since I read a lot! ... a byproduct of my profession I suppose). Perhaps here and there I'll throw in additional commentary, insight, thoughts, etcetera. I'll need to think up a catchy header too...something other than "Today's Readings: ..." ... I thought posting what I've been reading and some commentary would be something to have fun with :)

The trend toward "protecting" students from ideas they disagree with or are offended by is one of the most frightening trends I see in academia today. Lukianoff and Haidt make a clear, concise, and rational case for academia to pause, evaluate, and change direction. If we don't stop this trend, higher education may very well be planning its own funeral:
  • The coddling of the American mind

A very thought-provoking article...it would be interesting to take this framework and apply it to adult motivation and achievement. Does professional success and financial stability come about from hard work, or is success predisposed and should people be rewarded for effort (e.g. rewarded with entitlements)? What mind-set are we reinforcing, and/or how might a child's experiences with motivation in school follow them through life?
  • The secret to raising smart kids

It is disheartening to hear that so many studies fail to replicate, but encouraging that the discussion on replication continues to be advanced and encouraged. It is not a matter of pointing fingers, but is a matter of working to make our science the best it can possibly be. Time to regroup and reevaluate:
  • Estimating the reproducibility of psychological science

A spin on introvert/extrovert qualities within the business world. As with many personality characteristics, it is far too simplistic to boil someone's personality down to being purely introverted or extroverted, but practical implications are fun to consider. Big takeaway: listening is quite a valuable, and underutilized quality:
  • Why introverts make great entrepreneurs

Interesting insight on potential introvert/extrovert preferences for vacations. Rationally I suppose it makes sense. Would be a fun and interesting study to run. I enjoy visiting cities and beaches, but I'll take the mountains any day:
  • What your vacation says about you

This was absolutely hilarious. Language was a bit off-putting, but blunt commentary too funny:
  • Richard Nixon brought back to life via Twitter
