Excerpt of Tchaikovsky's Overture 1812, Op. 49 featuring fireworks and canons! The grand finale to a wonderful program yesterday by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Quite a fun evening with friends.
First Halloween down in San Diego...aka first Halloween not spent with my family...not that it's a major holiday or anything, but it is different not getting dressed up or going out with everyone!
So... being on my own I did what any native San Diego-ian would do if given the opportunity: I went and spent the evening at Balboa Park watching the silent film classic Phantom of the Opera (1925) accompanied by the Spreckels Organ! Ok, admittedly not an activity entirely becoming of my age (i.e. the average age of the crowd was probably 45 yrs older than me), but was still an enjoyable and safe way to spend the evening. And, anyway, pipe organs are pretty neat--not an instrument you'd find someone playing on any ol' street corner. Quite versatile, loud, powerful...a very fascinating instrument...
